Bear Stearns
Hewlett-Packard Consulting/The Paradigm Exchange, Inc.
Bear Stearns’ site is a large multi-tier system based on a workflow back end and publishing via XML. Broadvision was used for XML storage with Sybase for master site tables. VBA macros in Word templates published documents that were sent into the approval workflow. Web services were through J2EE using Weblogic. My role included the development and project management on a contract basis, hired through Hewlett-Packard Consulting, who was the GC for the project. I managed “tiger team” development to close up small gaps in functionality. Throughout the project, I also acted as a developer, first in a development-only role on the VBA macro front end, then later in concert with the tiger teams when necessary. I also managed one of the two central site databases, including data modeling, administration of the database schema, and overseeing data loads.
British Tourism Authority / Hidden BritainMattlin-Mandell, Inc.
(This site is no longer live)
Hidden Britain was the first of two sites I did with Mattlin Mandell, Inc. for the British Tourism Authority. Our involvement was only design and production of static HTML pages that were later integrated into the existing site by BTA staff.
Visit Britain was the second of two sites done with MM for the BTA. As with Hidden Britain, my involvement was in production of static HTML pages. Work on this site also included construction of HTML email that was sent out to opt-in customers.
eSix.net is my local home page. I host it on one of my internal servers. The home page contains information about various projects I'm working on at the moment, as well as some useful links. Each section of the page represents a development project that I've undertaken to expand my experience in web services. Check back occasionally for new clever things.
Iokey
Iokey, LLC
(This site is no longer live)
Iokey is an Internet karaoke web site. I was in charge of the site architectural and platform decisions for this dot.com startup. The site was built in Flash, using RTSP with Flash and RealAudio for the multimedia streaming. Data was predominantly stored in a Microsoft SQL 7.0 database, with pointers to media files. Aside from managing technology and external contractors, I also did some development work to fill various gaps in functionality. I was also responsible for drafting a design document for a unique technology for recording karaoke over the Internet.
Jamey Stillings is a photographer who approached Sam Earle, a colleague of mine, to have a web site done. Using a broad base of web site design people, Sam and I managed the construction of the site from the ground up. The site runs on a SQL Server 2000 database, using ASP for page generation. My role included project management, some development and some architectural input. Unfortunately, some of the decisions that I was not allowed to make caused poor site performance, including up-front graphics loading into JavaScript arrays. The site does function well over high-speed connections where loading large sets of graphics into a page happens quickly.
MYC was a quick development project on SQL Server and ASP. Yacht club administrators use the site to keep club members informed of upcoming events. Records are entered in a back end interface to populate the database. This site required no optimization due a small user base.
Moody's Investors Services uses a two-tier Microsoft-based solution. When I got there, the site was in transition from Sybase to SQL Server and ASP to .NET. I did fixes, enhancements, and new product development. My contract was administered through Sapphire Technologies, who did a grand job of placement and support while on contract.
This was one of my earlier sites, using straight ASP to write to flat data files. The dynamic end of this site is limited to collection of names and contact information.
PR Firms
Mattlin-Mandell, Inc.
I worked with Mattlin Mandell to redesign the Council of PR Firms web site. We've expanded the function set and enhanced the site from the original design by Mainsail. Check out the find-a-firm functionality on the home page. The site is written in ASP with a SQL Server back end.
My contract with TradeCard involved the integration of a new workflow system (SilkNet, later acquired by Ikena) into the existing site. SilkNet was ASP-based, running off a SQL Server engine. My responsibilities involved interaction with the graphics and user interface team to make the stock workflow system look and feel like the site that TradeCard employees were already used to. Some parts of SilkNet also involved XML interactions to accomplish certain tasks.
The Wales Tourism Board ran a contest for a free trip to Wales. It was intended to generate leads to people who may be prospects for sales of future trips. Mattlin Mandell, Inc. contracted the design, and my programming services. The site was built from ground up on FreeBSD using PHP for web scripting and Perl for back-end scripting. Entries were stored in flat files and processed by Perl scripts spawned from cron tasks. Each entry was also sent to multiple redundancy stores for safekeeping. The site resulted in approximately 15,000 leads and was disabled upon completion of the contest.
